Research & Plan Ahead

Researching and planning ahead is essential for ensuring your safety while traveling alone as a woman. Actually, this is an essential step to taking any adventure, solo or not. Plan your itinerary in advance, identifying safe neighborhoods, reliable transportation options, and reputable accommodations. Be aware of any areas that may have a higher risk of crime and take necessary precautions. Research local customs and appropriate dress codes to respect cultural norms and avoid standing out, as well as common scams and how to avoid them as a tourist. This knowledge allows you to make informed decisions and adapt your behavior accordingly and will help keep you happy and safe from the very beginning of your adventure.

Travelers Tip: Always get reliable travel insurance when planning for any solo adventure. Unfortunately, my life as a digital nomad isn’t always just about enjoying tasty foods and beautiful sights. No matter how hard I prepare, sometimes the unexpected happens, and I have to be ready. That’s why I recommend Nomad Insurance by SafetyWing for anyone considering a life of travel. Their flexible policies cover incidents in over 185 countries, and I don’t need to provide a travel itinerary in advance. In fact, you can sign up for SafetyWing even if you’re already on the go.

Arrive During the Daytime

While this is often easier said than done, depending on transportation options, do your best to arrive at your destination during the daytime, especially if it’s your first time. Arriving at a new destination during the day is a key safety measure for women traveling alone, and it provides several advantages that contribute to a safer experience. You can familiarize yourself with the area, locate landmarks, and identify safe routes to your accommodation. Daytime arrival also allows you to interact with locals, seek assistance if needed, and gain a sense of the neighborhood's atmosphere. Moreover, arriving during the day reduces the chances of getting lost or disoriented in unfamiliar surroundings.

Dress to Blend In

When traveling alone as a woman, dressing to blend in can contribute to your safety and overall peace of mind. The key is to avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself and to respect the cultural norms of the places you visit. By dressing modestly and appropriately, you can reduce the likelihood of unwanted attention, minimize the risk of harassment, and navigate unfamiliar surroundings. Remember, blending in does not mean sacrificing your personal style but rather adapting it to the local context, ensuring a safer and more comfortable travel experience.

Avoid Flashy Jewelry

Just as it’s important to blend in with your outfit choices, avoiding wearing flashy and expensive jewelry is just as important to stay safe while traveling solo as a woman. Flashy and expensive-looking accessories can attract unwanted attention and potentially make you a target for theft or other crimes. It's advisable to leave valuable jewelry at home and opt for more subtle and understated pieces while traveling. Doing so minimizes the risk of drawing unnecessary attention to yourself and reduces the likelihood of becoming a target. Additionally, another great tip for women travelers is to wear a fake wedding ring when trying to avoid attention from creepy guys. By wearing a ‘wedding ring,’ you are less likely to be harassed and eliminate unwanted attention before it even begins.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Staying aware of your surroundings is a fundamental aspect of staying safe while traveling alone as a woman. It involves being mindful of your environment and maintaining a heightened sense of awareness. Pay attention to the people around you, observe their behavior, and be cautious of any potential red flags. Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas, especially at night. Stay alert in crowded places and be mindful of pickpockets or other suspicious activities. It's also important to familiarize yourself with local customs and cultural norms to avoid inadvertently attracting unwanted attention. By staying aware of your surroundings, you can identify and respond to potential risks, ensuring a safer travel experience.

Connect With Other Travelers

Connecting with other travelers can be a valuable safety strategy when traveling alone as a woman and one of the most enjoyable parts about traveling solo. Engaging with fellow travelers provides an opportunity to share experiences, insights, and safety tips. Connecting with others allows you to form travel companionships or find trusted individuals to explore new destinations together. Travelers often look out for each other, offering support and creating a sense of camaraderie. Additionally, socializing with other travelers can help you gain valuable local knowledge, enabling you to make informed decisions.

Avoid Accessive Alcohol

I can not stress this point enough. When traveling alone as a woman, avoid consuming excessive amounts of alcohol. Alcohol can impair judgment, diminish awareness, and make you more vulnerable to potential risks. When consuming alcohol, it's important to do so in moderation and be mindful of your surroundings. It's advisable to know your limits, pace yourself, and be aware of local laws and customs regarding alcohol consumption. Additionally, be cautious of accepting drinks from strangers or leaving your drink unattended; please, take it from someone with personal experience.

Stay Connected

Always remember to stay connected, and let a friend or family member know about your travel plans, at least to an extent.   Prioritize staying in touch with family, friends, or trusted individuals who are aware of your itinerary. Regularly update them on your whereabouts and plans, especially when venturing to unfamiliar places. In case of an emergency or unexpected situation, having a reliable network of support can provide assistance and ensure your well-being. Staying connected not only offers peace of mind but also allows for immediate communication and assistance when needed.

Travelers Tip: Come up with some kind of system with a reliable source back home. For me, that’s my Nan. Although we don't talk on the phone often, we both know to text each other daily, even just to say hello. Not only does this put her at peace of mind, knowing I am alive, but it also lets me know she is safe and sound back home as well. A great option for keeping in contact back home is Airalo, which provides digital eSIMS for smartphones in countries all around the world. Rather than buying a physical SIM upon arrival or paying outraging fees for an international carrier, Airalo does it all for you with simple ease.

Be Confident

Being confident is a valuable asset for staying safe while traveling alone as a woman. Even if you aren’t confident at all, pretend like you are. Confidence not only projects a sense of self-assurance but also acts as a deterrent to potential threats. Maintain good posture, make eye contact, and walk with purpose to convey confidence in your demeanor. Confidence can help you navigate unfamiliar environments with poise and make quick, decisive choices if necessary. No matter how often I tend to get lost or turned around in a new place, I always act like I know exactly where I am going. I know eventually, I’ll figure it out, and in the meantime, I keep myself safe by drawing less attention and blending in more as a local.

Trust Your Gut

Above all, always trust your gut. Your instincts often serve as an intuitive compass, and it’s crucial to pay attention. Trusting your gut allows you to make informed decisions and take proactive steps to protect yourself. If something feels off or raises red flags, then it probably is. Honor those instincts and remove yourself from the situation. Your gut feelings can help you identify potential dangers, avoid risky situations, and maintain your personal safety throughout your journey. Trusting myself has got me out of a lot of potentially dangerous situations but also into a lot of memorable ones as well. The longer you are on the road, the easier it is to trust your own instincts but be open to new life-changing experiences.

While traveling solo as a woman can be an empowering and enriching experience, prioritizing safety is of utmost importance. By cultivating self-confidence, being prepared, and staying vigilant, you can navigate the world with resilience and enjoy the freedom and wonder of solo travel. Be intimidating. Be assertive. And most importantly, be confident. Traveling solo as a woman has the potential to change your life in ways you’ve never imagined. Never forget, as scary or dangerous as the world may seem to be, there are kind people everywhere, and a smile means the same thing in every language.
